This was the result of the organization growing over time and haphazardly adding pages without user flows in mind. I revamped the structure in order to give the content hierarchy and implemented a taxonomy to make connections across the site. Working with the client, we determined the best filtering options that would allow users to manipulate their results. Based on our internal guerrilla research, we decided location and activity would be the most useful. The section that I made the most adjustments to was the "Work With Us" section which needed to clearly communicate to the various target audiences how they could engage with the organization. After reviewing the results of the test, I made the decision to make the labels as clear as possible so that users knew what section to look in. The biggest challenge was helping the client understand that audience-based navigation is not helpful because their users do not think in that way. Before asking people to give money or take an action, it was important to clearly explain the problem and its effects on people so if you’re starting at the top of the page, you’re getting important context. Additionally, because I knew most people couldn’t articulate UCS’ purpose, we reiterated their mission in a customizable way on each issue page. Once people moved down the page and had a better sense of the problem and how UCS is working towards solutions, I incorporated CTAs to make direct asks to users, framing it in a way that people understand they’re directly contributing to solutions. Working collaboratively with the client, I determined our biggest questions and assumptions to guide our testing script. I facilitated testing with 6 different participants and identified issues. User testing provided areas for improvements, but also demonstrated that many things were working well.
